NOWRA Field Trip
Alternative Systems in Tough Soils
October 28, 2010
NOWRA Field Trips are an always popular event, and this trip promises to tie in nicely with discussions at the Annual Conference. What you hear about at the conference regarding alternative systems, you will see in action on the field trip.
The field trip is a separate, ticketed event. The cost to participate in the field trip is $75 for NOWRA members and Partnering Organizations, $100 to those who sign up in advance (no later than October 18); $125 for those who sign up thereafter.
The bus tour will leave the hotel at 8:30 AM and proceed to site 1 at 11007 Stoneridge and site 2 at 101 John Hoff Ct. in Avondale. The developer of this portion of the subdivision stripped off about 2 feet of good soil, leaving the poorer soils where the on-site wastewater systems had to be constructed.
1.
Site 1-Norweco Tank with 2 compartment pump tank followed by a sand filter bed and low pressure pipe drainfield.
2.
Site 2-Biomicrobic Tank with a distribution box and 600’ of 10” gravelless pipe drainfield.
The tour will continue to site 3 at 3848 Hoffman Rd. This system serves a small house
and pole barn. People board and ride their horses here. The soil profile showed 4b soils from the surface to below 60”.
3.
Site 3-Biomicrobic Tank with a distribution box and 500’ of drainfield.
4.
Site 4-246 Stoneledge in Glenstone Estates is a Jet Class 1 Tank and a Wisconsin mound.
The tour will continue to Defiance, MO to Terry and Cathy’s bar. This is a popular place especially during the summer when there is live music, but it sits on a postage stamp sized lot.
5.
Site 5-2-1000 gallon septic tanks with a 3000 gallon time dosed pump tank. It is pumped to a peat system at 15 gallons every 15 minutes. The peat system sits on a small rock pit about 6-8 feet deep. The system was designed with the theory that during the week the system would be pumped down sufficiently so that when there was a band there would be plenty of holding capacity.
Last, but not least, we will stop for a little R & R at the Sugar Creek Winery where we can sample some of the area wine and discuss what we have seen.
